Yoga

I did a yoga class last night. It was completely different to last week, but still good. I felt really good after - it really stretches out my hamstrings and hip flexors. However this morning I am very headachey - my neck and shoulders are feeling very stiff. Would love a massage right about now.

Plodding Along

Weight: 83.3 (-0.5)

Training: Saturday to Tuesday - none!
Yes that's right - I had a good rest! I did lots of walking with my mum and lots of entertaining the dog (as above) which could probably count as interval training, but no actual training.

Training Wednesday: 1 hour PT, 1 hour yoga

Weight is dropping, even though it is TTOM and I haven't trained. Perhaps some recovery time was exactly what I needed. Trained this morning but didn't feel rested like I thought I would. Pushed through.

I keep forgetting to bring my report from the scales so that I can record all the details. Basically what it told me was that I have 8kg of body fat to lose to get to my healthy weight range, but I can lose more if I want to. That is so refreshing as everything else I read doesn't take muscle mass into account - it is just the basic BMI calculation that just doesn't work for me. I've never really had a specific goal that I am aiming for - it's always been a case of wait and see.

Lots to report

First, the big news - my BR surgery is scheduled for 23 April. Saw the surgeon this morning - in the 12 months since I last saw him I've lost body fat from my boobs but no actual size - same as the past 2 years really! I am torn between being totally excited and wanting to vomit at the thought. Just need to think about the result, not the actual surgery! We've decided on aiming for a C cup. Nothing is guaranteed of course, but I told him I would rather be too small than too big.

I also have the report from the super dooper scales we did last week. I'll save that for when I have more time as it is quite interesting and detailed.

Training:
1 hour PT - 540 calories
10 min cross trainer
3 x 1 min rows with 10 pushups in between
lat pulldown, chest press (3x15)
cross trainer - 10 second intervals level 12
flies, triceps, crunches

Off to Melb tomorrow to see my parents. Yay!

Yoga

I did a really great yoga class last night - it was very bendy and stretchy. Exactly what I needed! I've been wanting to do it for ages, but at 7.30pm it is an awkward time as I don't want to eat right before, but if I waited til 8.45 when I got home, I would be STARVING and ready to go straight to bed. So I rushed home and had some eggs at 6pm, and was planning on a protein shake when I got home, but went straight to bed instead.

The problem with yoga is that my boobs get in the way - all the time! Have you ever seen a yoga instructor with big boobs? No. Me either. That is because it is very uncomfortable and sometimes they stop you from getting a really good stretch. For those who think I'm joking, here's a pic I took about a month ago...

Plodding along

Have been a bit slack with the posts this week. Still plodding along.

1 min row, 10 pushups, 15 crunches

Wednesday training: 1 hour PT
5 min xtrainer warm up
Shuttle runs, bike, boxing, squats with bar
Shoulder press, bicep curls, bicyles
Shuttle runs, bike, boxing, squats with bar
Shoulder press, bicep curls, bicyles
Shuttle runs, bike, boxing, squats with bar
Shoulder press, bicep curls, bicyles
100 calorie cross trainer challenge
side plank, plank, russian twists

Skipped my 5 x 800m sprints yesterday to rest my legs. I pulled up really sore after the weekend's training so have taken a couple of days off running to rest the hammy. It is so frustrating!

Eating was going really well, but overindulged with my higher carb day yesterday... basically got lazy and didn't have any protein with my snacks or lunch. Bad, bad girl! So now I feel like crap.... bloated, lethargic. That'll teach me!

Did my assessments at the gym this morning - on the wiz-bang scales that tell you all sorts of things. I can tell you that except for my high body fat percentage I am healthy - I am in the healthy range for the amount of fat around my organs and have a healthy amount of lean muscle. What it did tell me was that the % of body fat in my arms is high - alot higher than my "trunk". My BMR is 1500 calories.

Doing the assessments again in 3 weeks to see what changes I can get.

Top 5 Things Given Up in Order to Lose Fat

Another interesting question by the fabulous Katie P. Funny thing is that I don't MISS any of these things - they are all things I am happy to sacrifice for my mission of fat loss.

1. Calories - 2.5 years ago you could have seen me consume a day's worth of calories in one meal - McD's or something equally disgusting. Now I couldn't think of anything worse - I hate how eating like that makes me feel. One night of stodgy or sugary food gives me a food hangover the next day. So not worth it.

2. Money - I see it in an investment in myself, but I spend a fortune on my health and fitness mission: gym membership, 3 x PT sessions a week, osteo at least once a month, nutritionist/naturopath/counselling/massage (that is just one person... she's fabulous!), gym clothes, sports bras, running shoes and then of course the entirely new wardrobe when nothing fits anymore.

3. Time - I train almost every day, usually for an hour. I plan and then log my food, blog, record all my exercise and of course analyse all the data afterwards. I read alot - books, magazines and blogs.

4. Social Life - As I train at 6am, I'm usually in bed somewhere between 8.30 and 9.30pm. I train Saturday mornings, so don't go out Friday night, and I run on Sundays so that usually means an early Saturday night, or at least no drinking. What I have found myself doing is surrounding myself with people who have similar lifestyles and goals as me. We go out for breakfast instead of the pub at night - usually after a run or training session. Or we plan a big walk around stopping for a coffee somewhere nice. My close friends are all from the gym - either personal trainers or clients of personal trainers. That wasn't a conscious decision... it just happened that way!

5. Career as Priority - I used to work 12 hour days as standard, sometimes longer. I used to be contactable 24/7 and if something came up at work I would drop everything to be there. Now I train in the mornings before work, and if I have a class or something to get to after work I always go. Work can wait. I will do my best between 8.30 and 5.30pm, but I don't stay after 6pm.

Some days are harder than others

Training: 1 hour PT
Calories: 595
Max HR: 176
Av HR:125

Training: 5 min cross trainer warm up
200m treadmill incline 8% speed 8km/hr, bike 500m, pushups (all 3 sets)
Dumbell squat press, leg curls, crunches (all 3 sets of 20)
100m row, 30 second rest x 5

I found training really tough today - I was grumpy!
A) I trained last night, so only had 12 hours rest between sessions
B) I was due for oats for breaky today so was pretty carb depleted
C) I didn't sleep very well last night as the CFA website listed fires less than a km from my parents house - all is safe now, but still didn't sleep. Mum and Dad are pretty close to the Bunyip State Forest - yesterday spot fires started on the Gembrook side, which is where they live. So scary.

So I've had my oats this morning and just an hour and half later am in a much better mood.

What a weekend!

Saturday's weight: 84.6kg (-0.1)

After a lovely morning at the beach making sand castles with a 2 year old I went to see the nutritionist. We went through all my results for the past 2 weeks and noticed that I had been eating approx. 100g of carbs each day until about day 4 when I dropped down to 70g - I did this both weeks for some reason. Each time it was the day after this that I felt tired and emotional. Solution: don't let my carbs get too low! Quite simple really. It shows the value of recording everything - gives you something to learn from.

To try an increase my metabolic rate, she's given me a supplement called Energenics, which contains a whole heap of minerals. I'm taking this for a month and will then re-test.

So the plan is to keep eating and training as I have been, except adding oats for breakfast once or twice a week to keep my carb intake up and more consistent. This should help with my energy levels and mood.

I've also had 2 days off training. Saturday was by choice, and Sunday was cause I was too hungover! Too much wine after only eating a salad for dinner was not such a good idea afterall. So I didn't bother weighing myself yesterday or today - dehydration and hardly eating wouldn't give me an accurate reading. I did my measurements on Saturday and in 2 weeks have lost 1cm of my leg, 1cm off my arm and 1cm off my hips. It is working after all.

It's all about control

Feeling much, much better already. I had a quiet night at home and an early night last night and woke up feeling more energised this morning. I also decided it was time for some oats and that made a huge difference :)

Whilst warming up on the cross trainer this morning I blurted out my current headspace to Steve who is a PT at the gym, but not my PT - and also a good friend. After I've been to the nutritionist again on Saturday to discuss how to fix my metabolism, we're going to catch up for a chat to sort my head out and look at my training. He's also got these new super dooper scales that measures absolutely everything incl basal metabolic rate which should give me an idea of how much I need to eat. These scales even tell you details such as how much your left arm weighs... not sure why I would want to know that, but soon I will.

Thanks ladies for the lovely comments on yesterday's post. Katie P - I don't think of you as a complete stranger at all!!! Katie A - we'll sit and cry into our cup of tea together.... perhaps wine would be a better option! xxx

It's a Vicious Circle

Sometimes I read things that totally click in my head. Katie P found this article for me. Word for word it is where I am at.

Some studies suggest that in some people, the addictive nature of adrenal stress causes a euphoric feeling (an addiction to overtraining and under eating). Fear is certainly another driving point, and something that's as involved as a stress emotion.

For whatever reason, these people continually ignore the sane requests of their bodies. In response, thyroid function drops lower and lower, and they start bringing in more stress response signals. Not that this doesn't involve the thyroid, but you have really brought in some new hormonal players which you will read about in the adrenal section.

The professional dieter spends the majority of his or her time in some sort of a cutting or fat loss phase, and is constantly trying to live in a deficit. They eat too few calories, and usually have over-trained their bodies. These are the people who feel a compulsive need to exercise to "maintain" their fat loss.

They spend years training, and trying different carb intakes, lifting techniques, and fat loss protocols. They've read every book, every blog, followed along with everything that people on TV tell them to do, and usually end up stunted right where they started or heavier. Rarely do they achieve their goals.

The big problem comes in when we look at your caloric expenditure and burn. For the few of you that have been diligent enough to stick to this kind of training level, you have taken things to a new level of dysfunction. It's an actual physical and mental addiction.

I really don't know how to fix this. I need to break the cycle - I can eat more, but I'll train more to compensate because I feel like I "have to". As I said yesterday, I need to engage my 'team of professionals' - nutritionist is already booked in for Saturday. As much as I "talk" here about what is inside my head on my blog, I don't really talk about it with Rusty or any of the others like this. I usually have some sort of solution and ask "what do you think". I don't do the deep and meaningful stuff so much - especially when I am sooky sooky la la (potential tears) like I am today. I don't do vulnerability very well at all. I feel tense, anxious, frustrated and I can't control the feelings. Normally I would go for a run and clear my head to relax.... see there's that cycle again. I wish my mum lived close... I would visit and discuss over a cup of tea. Don't really feel like talking on the phone.

Day 26 of 70

Weight: 84.7kg (-0.3)
Training: NONE!!!

Yes that's right, I am taking a rest day. Thanks to the lovely Katie P and her wisdom I am thinking that perhaps I can't blame how I am feeling entirely on my eating plan. I've had one rest day in the past 2 weeks... perhaps that is why I am so tired???!!!

I went to see my osteo last night to get some movement back into my hips - always feel so much better afterwards. It did turn into a bit of a counselling session though! My osteo is one of the most highly qualified people in the fitness industry that I know. He's an osteo, a PT, a lecturer for the Diploma course, an ex body builder, a runner who's done the Ultra... the list just goes on. We always chat non stop when I go as we're interested in the same things and know alot of the same people. I was telling him about the advice the nutritionist had given me, the amount of training I'm doing and how I'm feeling. His personal opinion (not wanting to go against the advice of the nutritionist or PT) is that I will get better long-term results from training, and therefore I need to eat to train. The more muscle mass and the fitter I am the more efficient my body becomes at burning calories. Finding the right balance of what to eat and when is the challenge (as we all know!).

I have printed out all my data from mapmyfitness from the past month and I've marked where the change in diet took place almost 2 weeks ago. Here's what I know:
- My weight has SLOWLY gone done, but the rate has not changed with the change of diet
- Body fat is going down quite nicely, but only since changing my diet
- My hours of exercise is consistent
- The calories I burn per session has reduced by 100-200 since changing my diet
- My Basal Body Temperature is consistently 36.0 or 36.1 which is well below normal
- I have less energy/more tired than normal

Day 25 of 70

Weight: 85.0 (+0.1 -no no no)
Training: 1 hour PT
Calories: 605
Av HR: 120
Max HR: 177

Feeling exhausted. I trained twice Monday, twice Tuesday and again this morning... and those damn scales still aren't playing the game. I've lost 1.4% body fat in the past 2 weeks but no results on the scales. Over it.

Massive hill session last night - I did 4 circuits of this...

Was probably running slower than I walk by the end of it... but the arms were still going. That is what counts right?

Feeling every bit of my crazy training. I am wondering if my DOMS is messing with the scales - or if I am actually not losing any more weight than I was before I started the nutritionist's diet? I am missing my oats, milk, soy & linseed bread and berries. Would be totally prepared to stick with it... if it was working. I just don't think it is worth it. I think I can safely say that there is something else going on - it's not the food allergies and not carbs that are preventing me from losing weight. Saturday's appointment will tell.

Monday Madness at the Gym

Made the most of feeling great yesterday and smashed it at the gym. Have never sweated so much in my life... the air cond wasn't co-operating at all.

Av HR: 122
Max HR: 140

Training PM: 15 min cardio & pump class
Calories: 620
Av HR: 108*
Max HR: 165
*My HRM had a mini-meltdown and told me my HR was at 40% while I was on the treadmill for 5 mins... more like 90%!

I'm back!

Feeling soooooo much better today. It is amazing what some exercise, a healthy meal and 8 hours sleep can do for your frame of mind :)

Did a spin class this morning but am definitely feeling like my left hip is not moving properly so didn't push it too hard. It has been 4 weeks since my last osteo appt (going again on Wednesday), so maybe I need my appointments a little closer together. I had 3 good weeks, but this week has been really tough.

I have rediscovered the joy of mapmyfitness.com - I've been using it to map my runs and figure out distances, but I haven't actually logged in and saved anything for ages. Today I did and I found it was better than polarpersonaltrainer.com which I had been using for the past 2 months to record all my training. The benefits to mapmyfitness are that you can save your runs and enter them into your training diary, and you can link it to facebook. I also like the graphs better - I think they are easier to read. All the other features seem to be the same - you can record your training sessions, time, calories, max HR, av HR etc and add notes as well. Loving it.

Here's my stats for the past month...

Running for the sake of running

Decided to go for my run even though I didn't want to. Instead of mapping out my 8km from my training plan I just ran. I chose streets at random, ran along the water for a while and up a couple of huge hills - running 2 car spaces, walking 2 car spaces.

Running: 40 minutes
Calories: 586
Max HR: 165
Av HR: 145

and you know what... I feel great. Sweaty, but great! Just time for a quick shower before The Biggest Loser starts.

Sooky sooky la la la

There have been tears today - and for no particular reason. I don't think this diet is working for me - I am so damn tired all the time. Friday night I fell asleep before dinner, woke up and ate and then fell straight back asleep again. Couldn't even watch the DVD I had hired - woke up at the end of it. I should point out that I was at a friend's place... not at home on my own!

Training sucked on Saturday. Firstly I walked into the gym to do a pump class only to find 'The Commando' in the class. He was a boy I was seeing late last year (a commando in the army, hence the nickname) - but he doesn't even go to FF, let alone MY gym. He is friends with the instructor (which is how I met him) so that's why he was there I assume. To cut a long story short I wasn't that interested in him so I basically ignored him in the hope he would go away. Eventually he did. So cut to Saturday morning, he's in the class and I feel like the biggest bitch ever for not even dumping him nicely. So I skipped the class and did a half arsed weights session upstairs, making a quick exit minutes before the class ended so I didn't have to face him in front of everyone and with gym hair.

Saturday night made it through dinner but very nearly fell asleep at the table - luckily got my second wind and managed to hold a conversation for a while longer. Then today am meant to be doing an 8km run but I don't think I can muster the energy. I'll do my usual half hour with stairs at the end and see how I feel after that. My hamstring is really sore - haven't been able to do a good run since last Tuesday.

The scales are not my friend. They tell me I have not lost ANY weight this week and that is a lie. At least my body fat is down 1.7% and my clothes feel looser, so I just need to wait until the scales catch up. I am going to stick with the diet for another week until I go back to the nutritionist. All the literature I have says that it is normal to feel crap for 3-4 days after you start - for me it didn't hit until 5 days in... maybe it is just a bit of a delay. Fingers crossed I will be feeling energised and on top of the world tomorrow.
