Feeling flat

Feeling very flat today. Not sure if it is my sore hamstring, TTOM or the low carbs this week. Trained this morning but my calories were about 100 lower than usual for the hour. I even had a comment from two girls who I see every morning about how good I am looking, and I still feel flat.
So in effort to combat the flatness I am enjoying a few licorice bullets this morning - my little pick me up :)

Baggy pants
Yay! My pants are feeling baggy today!!! Woohoo!!! Glad things are actually moving at a pace the coincides with the amount of exercise that I do. The nutritionist rocks!!!
Running tonight as I decided a sleep in was more important. At the time didn't think about the fact that it will probably be close to 30 degrees when I finish work. Oh well, drink lots, sweat lots and jump in the pool when I'm done :) Tempo run today - 35 mins running with 20 minutes at tempo.
For about a year now I have been planning my BR surgery for April 2009. After seeing the surgeon for an initial consultation and a quote I decided to increase the level of cover for my health insurance to save myself $4000 in hospital costs. The waiting period was 12 months, which brings me to 1 April 2009. I was planning on having the surgery 6 April and use Easter as part of my recovery, giving me 8 days off work with only 4 days sick leave. However my boss is going to Thailand that week so I can't have the time off (there's only 5 of us here), which brings me to mid April.
Now that it is a reality I'm getting scared as opposed to excited. I've even considered spending the money on a nice European holiday instead. Am I crazy having elective surgery? Are the risks worth it? I've never been in hospital, never had surgery and never been seriously sick - I've had a wisdom tooth pulled out in the chair at the dentist (nothing major)... that's the most traumatic thing I've had done... and I was shaking like you wouldn't believe! Oh and I am allergic to anti-inflammatory medication so it will be ice packs all the way for my recovery.
So let's look at the motivation behind my decision to go through with the surgery...
- My boobs are massive and uncomfortable (surgeon estimates he will take 1kg from each side - that should give you an indication!)
- I have lost a heap of weight and my cup size is still the same. Some of the volume is gone, but I just have to stuff the loose skin into my bra
- I constantly have sore shoulders and sometimes a sore neck from carrying the weight
- I hate them and the attention I get
- Clothes shopping sucks - it is near impossible to buy clothes with buttons as if something fits my bust it will be too big everywhere else
- I can't wear nice strapless clothes even though I now like my shoulders, as a strapless bra doesn't give me the support I need
So, I've made an appointment with the surgeon on 20 Feb to have another consultation and book in my surgery for mid April. Shitting myself already!!!

How often...
(from Katie)
1) do you change your bedclothes?
Sometimes once a week... sometimes every 2 weeks
2) do you clean your toilets?
Once a week.
3) do you order in or pick up takeout because you just don't feel like cooking?
Probably once every 2 or 3 weeks
4) do you veg in front of the TV for more than 2 hours at a time?
The occasional weekend movie-fest... usually if the weather is crap
5) do you finish watching a bad movie you're not interested in just to get to the end?
usually i just fall asleep and wake up at the end... does that count?
6) do you do something you don't really want to just because you feel like you should?
Always... going to work or going for a run
7) do you snap at someone for no good reason?
Not often
8) do you give in to a craving?
Sometimes... trying to get better at this
9) do you wonder if you're missing out on something great?
Sometimes. Usually when I go home to Melbourne I wonder what all my friends are doing in Sydney. Sometimes I miss out on stuff in Melbourne. Can't have everything!

Very happy that the scales are playing the game this week - I'm down 300g already, and TTOM arrived today so I am really looking forward to seeing the result at the end of the week. Diet is going really well - I am never hungry. Had a craving for something sweet last night so had a pear with a sprinkle of pecan muesli (home made from the ketoslim recipe). So yum! Every morning I feel like having cereal, but I haven't bought any milk so I can't! Then by the time I have cooked my eggs and start eating I really enjoy it.
Didn't have quite as much energy as normal when I trained this morning. That could be for several reasons
1) It is day 3 of my new diet and it takes about 3 days to feel energised - kind of like a detox I guess
2) My carbs are alot lower than normal - perhaps too low
3) TTOM started today, and that always reduces my energy level for a day or two
So, sticking with the plan to see what happens

Weight Loss Strategies
When I went to see my nutritionist on Saturday, she commented that I had put some really good strategies into place. This kind of surprised me, because it has all become so "normal" for me... I don't even think of them as strategies.
Here's some of the things I do to keep myself on track to achieving my weight loss goal:
• Eat 5 small meals a day
• Eat lean protein with every meal
• Don't eat starchy carbs after 4pm
• Drink 2-3 litres of water a day
• If I am feeling hungry, drink a glass of water first to see if it really is hunger, or just thirst
• If I feel like something yummy after dinner, brush my teeth, go for a walk, or just go to bed
• At least 3 strength training sessions a week
• At least 3 cardio sessions a week
What strategies do you have in place?

Training: 25 min run, 7 mins stairs
Calories: 503

Couldn't be bothered walking all the way to Mosman this morning for spin, so I went for a run this afternoon instead and finished it off running stairs for 7 minutes - not fun but felt good at the end. I had to leave the apartment as flatmate and friends were about to devour maltesers and cookies and cream icecream while watching a DVD - needed to remove myself from the situation :)
Last night I overate for the first time in soooooo long. The best bit is that I don't feel guilty - I just ate less today and added the stairs onto my run. We went out for tapas - I had a couple of glasses of red wine (the first since NYE) and enjoyed some really good food... just a little too much of it. Walking home I actually felt uncomfortable I was so full - nice to remind ourselves occasionally why we don't do that on a regular basis. I'm sure if I hadn't have eaten like that a spin class this morning would have been fun.

I went to see the nutritionist yesterday and have come away feeling pretty happy and confident. She's made a couple of changes to my diet, and I need to see how that goes for 2 weeks and go back. I've also got a couple of tests to do in the meantime which will give more information on my thyroid and general heatlh.
The first thing she has changed is that I am not to eat anything that has more than a moderate level of salycilates. I'm allergic to salycilates, but can tolerate a certain amount in my diet without having any kind of reaction. The reason I choose to still include them in my diet is that it includes most fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices. While I haven't had any kind of reaction in a year or so, she thinks that I may be placing un-necessary strain on my immune system. So the only fruit I will have is pears or golden delicious apples (peeled). Vegetables are less limited, but alot of the key ones are out including tomatoes, cucumber, capsicum and broccoli. Herbs and spices - I can eat garlic, parsley and corriander... not much else.
The second thing she has changes is my intake of starchy carbs - not really a surprise. I am only having starchy carbs with my snacks - the logic being that I should be less hungry and therefore consume less. My diet is a revised version of this program. I say revised, as because of the level of training I do I won't be dropping my carbs as low as most people on the program.
A typical day will look like this:
Breakfast: omlette or scrambled eggs with chicken, mushrooms, low fat cheese
Snack: pear, low fat yogurt and 2 tbs muesli (no dried fruit as it contains salycilates)
Lunch: chicken and salad with nuts
Snack: protein shake and a handful of rice crackers
Dinner: salmon and salad
Still maintain my current one treat meal a week eating whatever I like (try to avoid salycilates). I'm going to miss my bread, berries, grapes and hot chocolate, but apart from that it shouldn't be too bad. Worth a try anyway.
Today I have become super organised. I went to the fruit & veg shop and supermarket this morning, bought enough food for the next 3 days and have chopped everything I need. I bought a BBQ chicken, removed all skin and fat and chopped the breast meat for omlettes and salads. Pears are chopped, and I've loads of vegies for a stirfry. It is 3pm, I've still got 2 meals to go and I am not hungry at all (did sleep in, so meals are a little later than usual).

How hot is it???!!! Didn't sleep very well and certainly felt it at the gym this morning. I was sweating before I even got to the gym!
Last night had dinner with some of the 6am crew - random people I see at the gym every day, but some of who I hardly know. It was really good to get to know like minded people: ie. people who all analysed the menu items and estimated calories, protein, fat and carb content of each item; people who drank mineral water as it was mid-week; and people who had to go home at 9pm because it was getting close to bedtime! Loved it.
Have decided to go and see the nutritionist at the gym to get a better idea of what and how much I should be eating. For the past 2 weeks I have tracked everything and trained my arse off, yet have only dropped 600 grams. I could continue as it may take a while to see results, but I figure I may as well get some advice anyway.
I lose more weight when I drop my carbs - I have proven that before. Problem is that I can't seem to find the balance between eating enough carbs to train and losing body fat. Last time I tried I kept getting sick every time I increased my training to the level it is now. Oh and I LOVE my carbs! I need some help to get out of the cycle of craving and giving in. Will report in tomorrow afternoon with results.

Post Party Season
After a very busy silly season filled with xmas drinks, bbqs, parties, dinners and general frivolity I am feeling a bit lost. I don't really have any big social events coming up that I can look forward to. I admit I haven't been very active in organising like I usually do as I'm trying to save money, trying to eat well and not drinking - saving the calories/dollars for special occasions only. But now my diary consists of only work stuff, PT sessions and spin classes. How sad is that?
Not one to sit back and wait for something to happen I've spent my afternoon organising my social life and now have several things booked in for the long weekend with a variety of friends. I've got dinner Thursday (not officially the weekend, but with people from the gym who also train at 6am so I should be safe), coffee after work Friday with a girlfriend, followed by the pub with a group of people I used to work with (soda water for me). Saturday training followed by a pedi and mani with a girlfriend and then a spin class later in the day. Sunday pump class, a long run and then wine (maybe a glass or two!) and tapas. Monday consists only of exercise based activities at this stage, but as it is supposed to be hot I'm guessing we'll end up in the pool. Should be a good balance of training, eating, social activities and relaxation!

Still feeling really sore from spin/pump/running up hills (take your pick). Quads and hammys very sore... I even walk funny when I first get out of my chair :)
Had a yummy roast lamb for dinner last night. Baked carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato and potato (just a little bit) and had broccolini as well.... yum!
Tomorrow morning I'm doing one of Rusty's running sessions. Not quite sure what it involves yet, but I am sure I'm not going to like it.

After spending 1.5 days of my weekend in bed and feeling sorry for myself I dragged myself out for a walk yesterday afternoon. Felt pretty good, so walked for 2 hours around Neutral Bay, Cremorne Point, up to Military Rd and back home. Had a nice easy dinner of mushroom soup (found it in IGA!)

This morning did a spin class and felt pretty good. Didn't push it as hard as I usually would as a super high heart rate would just bring on coughing - no need for that! Doing a pump class tonight with my 2 flatmates. Planning on loading up the weights to bring on a good set of DOMS for the upper body. Will go reasonably easy on the legs as I want to run in the morning.
Downloaded my first Cardio Coach track this morning. Have been thinking about it for ages but never got around to it. Going to load up the ipod tonight and do Volume 6 tomorrow - sprints and hills on the treadmill. Sounds like fun.... NOT! Rusty did my program on the weekend but haven't seen it yet. 9 weeks til the big run.

Week 1 Result
Weight: 85.3kg (-0.7)
Loss for the week 0.5kg
Was hoping for a better start than that, but at least it is in the right direction. Spent most of yesterday in bed reading or watching dvds. Feeling alot better, but not 100%. Considering some weights - definitely not cardio.

Day 7 of 70
No weigh in this morning and no training :(
Today I had planned - 1 hour spin class, kayaking with the girls and a pilates class. I was even considering a half hour upper body weights session before spin. My whole day was to revolve around exercise and I was really looking forward to it. Tomorrow a pump class in the morning and a 5km run. I am perhaps becoming obsessed with training.
Instead I've cancelled it all in favour of staying in bed with my book, a trashy mag, a box of tissues and some cold and flu tablets. I feel like crap. I was on fire with my training this week - I was already ahead of Rusty in hours of training (yay me!) and was planning on kicking his arse over the weekend... and he had a 30km run planned for Sunday!
I find it so hard to know what to eat when I am sick. A) I don't have much of an appetite. B) I need to eat to give me some kind of energy to get out of bed C) I'm not training so need to be careful what I eat. Deep down I know that I need to eat loads of fruit and vegies - but I FEEL like vegemite on toast... if someone wants to make it for me. Or mushrooms soup... but I couldn't find my favourite at the supermarket this week, so I don't have any. For now, I am going with a nice hot cup of tea

More HRM training
Have been quiet at work today so lots of reading! I had a look at more of my PT sessions and the Zones. They vary quite alot - Saturday's session I spent most of the time in Zones 2 and 4, with a fair bit in 3. Saturday was sprints and weights - pretty much the same as what I did today - except that Rusty was training with me on Saturday. I think the difference is that there was less rest (ie. none!) in between sets on Saturday. All these numbers have me fascinated now! I'm going to keep monitoring and recording everything - just like my own little science experiment :)
HRM Training
From what I can figure out, HRMs are pretty darn accurate. A person's max HR can vary greatly, and has nothing to do with fitness. Basically it is just genetics. Your max HR is what it is - and it is possible for it to be over 200.
*EDIT: I also found this:
Dehydration can increase the heart rate by up to 7.5%
Heat and humidity can increase the herat rate by 10 beats/minute
Given it was stinking hot at 6am this morning, that may explain it.
Your resting HR however, is determined by fitness. Mine is 60 which puts me in the 'elite' category. Haha I love it! I might do it again though, as I've just read that you should do it in the morning, before you get out of bed as so many factors (incl caffeine and stress) can affect the result. I did mine in the afternoon, straight after work and probably not too long after a Diet Coke.
I did find some interesting and easy to understand info on Sports Zones. My HRM has this feature, but I've never used it as I didn't know how to set them up and wasn't really sure what zone I should be training in. I've now set them up and had a look at my results over the past week. Here's what I've discovered...
• When I train with Rusty I spend most of the time in Zone 2 and 3... exactly where I should be for fat burning and aerobic training
• This morning I trained on my own and burnt a similar amount of calories as I do with Rusty, but I spent too much time in Zone 1. I did however get into Zone 5 (hence the 224 max HR
• In a spin class I spend more than half the time in Zone 2 for fat burning, and a little time in each of the other zones
If anyone else has any advice on HRM training I'd be happy to hear it. You can email me emh_1977@hotmail.com or comment. I found this website quite good.

Day 5 of 70
Exercise: treadmill sprints and weights, 50 minutes
Calories: 667
Max HR: 224
Av HR: 135
Training:
5 min jog
4 x 90 second sprints with 30 second rest
2 min walk
lat pull downs
shoulder press
pushups
(3 sets x 15)
4 x 90 second sprints with 30 second rest
2 min walk
stretch and lie on the ground, breathe
Did anyone notice the max HR for today? That is what my HRM tells me. Seriously is that even possible? The general (not very accurate) method for calculating HR is 220-age, which makes my max 189. I've used another formula I found somewhere (not sure where) which calculates my max at 195, so this is where my HRM is set. I've reached 195 before, but I don't think I've gone over that.
I'm off to do some research on heart rates and HRM accuracy.

Exercise: 1 hour PT (cardio)
722 cal
Max HR 170

I've decided to record what I do in a PT session so that when I do a session on my own I can just pick one. It also shows which ones burn the most calories - although sometimes that can be affected by how I am feeling on the day and how hard I push it.
5 min warm up cross trainer
Circuit:
50 calories on cross trainer Level 12
5 x shuttle runs
4kg medicine ball throws at the wall
boxing
Abs: 15 x crunches, 15 x side crunches (each side), 10 (each leg) reverse crunches

How do you do your cardio?
Katie P asks, so I shall answer! Actually, I don't have one answer... I have many, so I'll share a few. Feel free to adjust the levels/goals for your own fitness. I usually mix cardio and weights all into one session, so some of these are quite short.

WOOOOOHOOOOO I rock! My run felt really good today. Road tested my new shoes and it made the world of difference. Still a bit sore but definitely an improvement. Most importantly - my head was in the right place
Day 2 of 70
I forgot to bring my HR monitor to work today to record my details from spin class this morning. It wasn't very spectacular though - i struggled! I think a rest day is in order, but I've got PT with Rusty Tues, Wed and Fri... so won't get a rest day til Thursday. Soldier on!

10 Week Challenge - Day 1 of 70
Starting weight: 85.8kg
Current weight: 85.8kg
Starting BF: 39%
Current BF: 39%
Waist 92cm
Hips 111cm
Leg 68cm
Arm 35cm
Feeling tired and wondering if I can do this. Went to breakfast with a girlfriend at 10.30am - that is kind of an inbetween time for me on a Sunday, as usually I would eat around 8 or 9am, then again at 12ish. I wasn't awake early enough to do meal 1 before I left so I was starving by the time breakfast came. I had a fruit & ricotta crepe... probably not the smartest choice, but it was soooooo yum! The rest of the day has gone to plan but I am STARVING now that I have been for a swim and a jog. Have had some fruit but it didn't touch the sides. Early dinner tonight!
Have bought up big on fruit and veg for the next couple of days. Going to roast some pumpkin tonight to put in my salads, I've got lamb for tonight and tomorrow's lunch - looking forward to that. Switching back to oats for breakfast tomorrow - have been having weeties instead since the weather has been warmer, but I think the oats keep me fuller for longer. Can mix in some protein powder as well.

Tired tired tired
I was sound asleep when my alarm went off at 7.15 this morning - that is not like me at all! Did a speed session on the treadmill with Rusty, with some weights thrown into the middle. My legs are really aching now! After a warm up jog around the block before the gym opened we did 90 seconds on, 30 seconds off x 4 times (I was running at 11km an hour, which is fast for me!). Got through the first set without any pain in my hammy or knee which was quite exciting. It kicked in on the second set of 4 x 90 seconds, and ended up doing the last 2 sprints on the cross trainer instead.
Max heart rate 190 (101% of max!) , average 140. 833 calories.
I am starting my 10 week challenge tomorrow so will post starting weight and some measurements in the morning. I am thinking I need to rethink my eating plan and supplements to give my muscles the maximum opportunity for repair. Might go back to the naturopath even, but for now I am going to start taking my magnesium/iron/potassium again, and my multivitamin. I have been really slack on that for the past month and am starting to feel the effects of all the extra training. Everything hurts and I am super tired today. About to go for a swim and then head into the Domain to see Cat Empire play - that finishes about 9pm so might not stick around for the next band... an early night is in order.

The scales lie!!!
Seriously, the scales lie! Today they tell me I have gained 1kg (which I am sure I haven't) and I have lost 7% body fat - I'm sure that isn't even possible in a few days. So will try again tomorrow and see what they tell me. I was getting ready for the gym so didn't have time to move them around and see what happened.
Went for a 30 min run last night. Was planning on a bit longer, but the sore knee kicked in just before the 30 min mark so ended up walking back. Max heart rate 168, average 143. 475 cal.
Did a 1 hour PT session this morning. Max heart rate 182, average 130. 739 cal. Did some stretching afterward, including using the foam roller to stretch my ITB - can't believe how much it hurt! There was almost tears :(
I'm a bit daunted by my 10 week challenge - I am a long way from running 10km at the moment.

A new plan
I've decided I need some smaller goals to keep me on track and boost my efforts. In 10 weeks time, the Lindfield 10km fun run is on, and I've decided I'm going to do it. I'm going to get Rusty to come up with a 10 week program for me to increase my running distance - I am consistently doing about 5km at the moment, so 10km is definitely a stretch. I would also like to be 10kg lighter by then.
So...
• I am going to plan/track my food in Calorie King every day
• I am going to weigh myself every day and record it in a spreadsheet
• I am going to do 3 running sessions a week (1 interval or speed session, 1 long run and 1 easy run) - depending on the program Rusty makes for me
• I am going to do 3 x PT sessions a week, 1 of which may incorporate the speed/interval session
• I am going to do 1 x spin class a week
• I am not going to drink more than 1 or 2 glasses of wine with dinner once a week
• I am going to plan a treat meal each week and love every mouthful of it
I'll report back in on the exercise component when Rusty has done his homework. Off to Calorie King now to work out a food plan for the next week.

The body report
Feeling pretty sore today after being poked, prodded, stretched and bent by my osteo. The problem does relate back to my SI joint in my hips - the same thing that caused my hamstring tear back in August last year. As the joint isn't moving properly (after doing so much running and walking including lots of stairs and hills), the hamstring has to work extra hard and there is a little scar tissue there again. My ITB on the left side is extremely tight which is not allowing my patella to track properly - causing the pain and a nice little grinding noise when I move my knee.
So, lots of stretching... some of which I can't do by myself. Myofascial stretching is what I need to do to my hammy - the article in the link mentions you may fall asleep - haha not likely! It is extremely uncomfortable.

When the body packs it in
The one thing that really frustrates me on this journey, is when you finally have your head in the right place - ie. training well AND eating well, and your body decides it doesn't want to play anymore. I find getting the head right in regards to nutrition is the hardest part - I love my training and 9 times out of 10 I get out of bed at 5.30am to either train at the gym or run. If I do decide to sleep in, I run after work.
About a year ago I saw a nutritionist as every time I increased my training - either intensity or to the occasional twice a day, I would get sick. Usually just a head cold - but it happened continuously. A multivitamin and some minerals sorted me out.
This time it is my legs - primarily my left leg. I tore my hamstring mid last year which turned out to be a side effect of the hip displasia that I was born with. I have been seeing an osteo regularly since about September last year and haven't had any ongoing problems - he frees up the movement in my hips and lower back and it sorts it out. Until now. This week my hamstring is sore again, and so is my knee. I haven't been for a run since last Friday - instead I've done plenty of cross trainer and bike. I have another appt with the osteo tonight to put me back together again. I wonder if I will have to do this for the rest of my life? It frustrates me because I would really like to improve my running and push through until I actually enjoy it. Every time I think I am getting closer to that point the body packs it in.
On a more positive note, my cardio fitness has improved over the past 12 months. I am beating all my records on the cross trainer and rower. More focus on weights needed - I am not lifting as heavy as I was last year.

The single life
As the theme for the day seems to be sharing love lives and the traumas that go along with that, time for some boy news for you. Not much compared to what is going on for some people, but here's my current situation.
Mid December went out with a group of friends from the gym and had a great D&M with a particular boy I have known from for about 2 years, but have never seen him outside of the gym. At the end of the night he called to check I got home OK, and then sent a text saying how nice it was getting to know me.
Fast forward late December to a BBQ where we chat til 3am and then he walks me home. A few days later and I get a really nice text on xmas day. Monday last week he came over for dinner - again hours of chatting about all sorts of things and a follow up text saying he had a great time. He invited me to a picnic with some mutual friends on new year's day.
All sounding good right? I had my reservations...
1) he goes to the same gym, so if things don't go well, there will be no avoidance as I see him most mornings
2) he is friends with my PT (Rusty), so as above
3) he recently split up with his wife, mother of his 2 little kids (probably could be reason number 1, but actually, the gym thing bothers me more)
This was followed by a couple of days of serious thinking and debriefing with the girls and I came to the conclusion that there was no harm in continuing to see him as I had been, to see if he was worth the risk.
A few days later, we had a NYE party at our apartment and he had said he would drop in after seeing his kids.
By 11pm I hadn't heard from him at all. Rusty sent him a message asking if he was coming, and he replied no, he was staying with the kids as he had to pick them up at 8am the next morning anyway. No big deal - except that he didn't call or text to say he wasn't coming. Why do guys do that? Or is it just us girls who expect that if you say you are coming to a party you will actually show up? Not even a 'happy new year' text. I heard via other friends that the picnic was cancelled, but nothing from gym boy.
Then yesterday I get a text saying he would call either today or tomorrow and catch up. I haven't replied - I figure I'll let him call and see what he says. So the big question is... IS HE WORTH IT?

Exercise of the Day
A new one for today... RUSSIAN TWISTS. OMG - the pain!!! I had to do 2 sets of 10 with a medicine ball... there was not going to be any more than 10. Can't wait for the fat doona to dissolve so I can see the awesome set of abs I must have underneath
Happy New Year!!!
Back at work today and struggling with being inside in front of a computer - big time!
I am actually quite impressed with my form over the past 2 weeks. I have managed to lose over 1kg and not eat my way into oblivion! Have trained every day except from xmas day (but I walked 8km so I guess that counts) and yesterday. I even went for a run on new year's day - who does that???!!! Had a late one NYE, but wasn't hungover which was a refreshing change to the rest of the weekends in December :)
So the last 2 weeks have comprised of variations of a routine of training, shower & breakfast, housework/washing or reading my book for an hour or two. Then lunch, a swim in the pool, a walk, run or reading, dinner, DVD and a reasonably early night. Wish I could continue like that forever! Unfortunately I won't get paid if I don't go to work :)
